What does the Mini-IPIP measure?

The Big Five personality traits, each with 4 items: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and intellect/imagination (the counterpart of openness to experience). It is the short form of the 50-item IPIP measure, built for research that has no room for a long inventory.

Scoring the Mini-IPIP

  1. Very inaccurate = 1 … very accurate = 5; reversed items (6–10 and 15–20) are scored the other way round (6 minus the response).
  2. Each trait score is the sum of its four items (4 to 20): extraversion 1, 6, 11, 16 · agreeableness 2, 7, 12, 17 · conscientiousness 3, 8, 13, 18 · neuroticism 4, 9, 14, 19 · intellect/imagination 5, 10, 15, 20.
  3. On neuroticism a higher score means more emotional instability; on the other four traits a higher score means more of that trait.
  4. In this template each option's stored value is its score (reversed items already reversed); five hidden calculated fields build the trait sums and the SPSS export codes every item with its score.

Interpreting Mini-IPIP scores

The Mini-IPIP and IPIP have no cut-offs or low/high ranges; the traits are continuous. Compare scores with your own sample's mean or a reference sample of similar age and sex.

Mini-IPIP validity and reliability

  • Donnellan et al. (2006) developed and tested the Mini-IPIP across five studies; internal consistency of all five scales was acceptable in every study (alpha of .60 or higher).
  • Test–retest correlations over a few weeks and several months were close to those of the parent 50-item IPIP-FFM, and its pattern of validity matched other Big Five measures.

Which Mini-IPIP items are reversed?

Eleven items: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. In this template their reversed scores are already set on the options.
