What does the SWLS measure?

A person's global cognitive judgement of satisfaction with their life — one component of subjective well-being. Instead of asking about specific domains (work, family, health), it lets respondents judge their life as a whole by their own standards.

Scoring the SWLS

  1. Each item scores the number of the chosen option (1 to 7); there are no reversed items.
  2. The total is the sum of the five items, from 5 to 35; 20 is the neutral point.
  3. In this template a calculated field adds the items with SCORE() and another one assigns the seven-level interpretation.

Interpreting SWLS scores

ScoreLevelSuggested action
5–9Extremely dissatisfied—
10–14Dissatisfied—
15–19Slightly dissatisfied—
20Neutral—
21–25Slightly satisfied—
26–30Satisfied—
31–35Extremely satisfied—

The ranges come from the SWLS score-interpretation guide published by Diener.

SWLS validity and reliability

  • In the original article, with 176 undergraduates, coefficient alpha was .87 and the two-month test–retest correlation was .82.
  • Factor analysis found a single factor: the five items measure one construct.
  • Pavot and Diener (1993) reviewed later studies and confirmed the scale's reliability and validity across age groups.
