Writing a cheque amount in words

A cheque carries the amount twice: once in figures and once in words. Cheque amounts in Iran are in rials, so if you are thinking in tomans, multiply by ten first. Five million tomans becomes «پنجاه میلیون ریال» on a cheque.

  • Write the amount in words from the very start of the line with no extra spaces, and fill the empty end of the line with a stroke so nothing can be added.
  • Write the word «ریال» (rial) after the amount.
  • Use three-digit separators in the figure (50,000,000) so the zeros can be counted at a glance.
  • The amount in figures and in words must match exactly; a mismatch between them is a common reason for a cheque to bounce.
  • On a Sayad cheque, the amount you register in the Sayad system must match the amount on the paper cheque.

Rules for writing numbers in Persian words

  • Parts are joined with «و» (and): 123 is written «یکصد و بیست و سه» and 2,050 «دو هزار و پنجاه».
  • «و» also follows thousand, million and billion when another number comes after: 3,000,200 becomes «سه میلیون و دویست». A group that is zero is not written and gets no extra «و»: 5,000,000 is just «پنج میلیون».
  • Hundreds are written as one word with their own forms: «دویست» (200), «سیصد» (300), «پانصد» (500), «ششصد» (600) and «نهصد» (900); not «دو صد» or «پنج صد».
  • In financial text and on cheques people usually write «یکصد» (one hundred) and «یک هزار» (one thousand) so that no digit can be slipped in front; in ordinary text «صد» and «هزار» are fine too. This tool writes the financial form.
  • A «میلیارد» (billion) is a thousand millions and a «تریلیون» (trillion) a thousand billions. In news and budgets «هزار میلیارد» (a thousand billion) is usually said instead of trillion; both are correct.
  • Decimals are read with «ممیز» (point), and the decimal part takes the name of its place: 3.25 is «سه ممیز بیست و پنج صدم» and 0.5 is «پنج دهم».
  • Negative numbers start with the word «منفی», as in «منفی پانزده» (minus fifteen).

Rial or toman?

The official currency of Iran is the rial, and one toman is ten rials. Tomans are used in everyday speech and most prices, but cheques, bank documents and most formal contracts and invoices are written in rials. This tool writes the amount in both units; if a rial amount is not divisible by ten, its toman equivalent is written as «… تومان و … ریال» (… tomans and … rials).

Where do you need numbers in words?

  • Cheques and promissory notes: the amount is written both in figures and in words.
  • Lease, sale and construction contracts: many contracts state that if the two differ, the amount in words prevails.
  • Invoices and pro-forma invoices: the grand total is written in words below the table.
  • Online forms: in Porsino's form builder the Amount field can show the words next to the number so the person filling it in is sure of the zeros; in an Order and payment form the final amount is also calculated with a formula.

Frequently asked questions

How large a number can be converted?

Up to nine hundred and ninety-nine quadrillion, i.e. an 18-digit number, which is enough for any amount. Decimals are accepted up to six digits.

Should 1000 be «هزار» or «یک هزار»?

Both are correct. Financial text and cheques prefer «یک هزار» and «یکصد» so nothing can be added in front of the number; this tool writes that form too.

Are cheque amounts in rials or tomans?

Rials. The paper cheque and the Sayad system both take the amount in rials; multiply a toman amount by ten.

Does it accept Persian digits and numbers with commas?

Yes. Persian, Arabic and English digits are accepted, as are the separators «,», «٬» and spaces. Write the decimal point as a dot, «٫» or «/».

How are decimals written in words?

The whole part, the word «ممیز» (point) and the decimal part with the name of its place: 2.75 is read «دو ممیز هفتاد و پنج صدم» and 0.03 «سه صدم».

Can Excel convert numbers to Persian words?

Excel has no built-in function for Persian words; it is usually done with a macro or an add-in. For a few amounts, copying from this tool is simpler.
