What does the IPAQ measure?

Physical activity over the last 7 days in every domain of life (work, home, transport and leisure) at three intensities — vigorous activity, moderate activity and walking — plus time spent sitting on a weekday. It was built for population surveillance of adults, and its protocol recommends it for ages 15 to 69.

Scoring the IPAQ

  1. MET-minutes/week = MET × minutes per day × days per week; walking 3.3, moderate activity 4.0 and vigorous activity 8.0 METs. The total is the sum of the three activities.
  2. Data cleaning follows the IPAQ protocol (November 2005): times under 10 minutes (and their days) are set to zero, times over 180 minutes count as 180, and if the three daily times add up to more than 960 minutes the response is an outlier and excluded (the “valid response” field is 0 and the MET fields are empty).
  3. “High”: vigorous activity on at least 3 days totalling at least 1,500 MET-minutes/week, or 7 or more days of any combination totalling at least 3,000 MET-minutes/week.
  4. “Moderate”: 3 or more days of vigorous activity of at least 20 minutes a day, or 5 or more days of moderate activity and/or walking of at least 30 minutes a day, or 5 or more days of any combination totalling at least 600 MET-minutes/week. Anyone not meeting these is “low”.
  5. Days of different activities are added together for the 5-day and 7-day criteria (protocol section 7.6); for the “30 minutes of moderate activity and/or walking” criterion this template counts the days of moderate activity and of walking that lasted at least 30 minutes.
  6. Sitting time is not part of the score and is reported separately. Differences from the paper form: time is asked in minutes (not hours and minutes) and respondents give their best estimate instead of ticking “don't know”.

Interpreting IPAQ scores

ScoreLevelSuggested action
Category 1Low—
Category 2Moderate—
Category 3High—

The three levels and their criteria (above) come from the official IPAQ protocol. There are no official thresholds for MET-minutes themselves, and the IPAQ committee recommends reporting medians and interquartile ranges rather than means.

IPAQ validity and reliability

  • Craig et al. (2003) tested reliability and validity in 14 centres in 12 countries: test–retest correlations (Spearman) clustered around .8 and criterion validity against accelerometers had a median of about .30 — comparable to other self-report questionnaires.
  • The same study recommended the short “last 7 days” form for national monitoring and the long form for more detailed research; the age range tested was 18 to 65.
  • The IPAQ protocol does not recommend the short form as an outcome measure in small intervention studies; it is primarily for population monitoring.

Using the IPAQ in your thesis with Porsino

  1. Sign up for free and click "Build a form from this template"; the items, options and every option's score (reversed items included) are ready.
  2. If you need demographic questions (age, gender, education), add them on a separate page; keep the item wording and order unchanged so the scoring stays valid.
  3. Publish the form and send its short link or QR code to your research sample; respondents fill it in without signing up and see their score and its interpretation at the end.
  4. Each respondent's total score and level are saved automatically in separate columns; export to Excel or SPSS from the responses page and go straight to analysis.

Frequently asked questions about the IPAQ

How many questions does the IPAQ short form have?

Seven: days and time of vigorous activity, moderate activity and walking over the last 7 days, and sitting time on a weekday.

How are IPAQ MET-minutes calculated?

MET × minutes per day × days per week; walking 3.3, moderate 4 and vigorous 8 METs. For example, 30 minutes of walking on 5 days = 3.3 × 30 × 5 = 495 MET-minutes.

How is the IPAQ activity level decided?

By combining days and MET-minutes under the official protocol: “high” (for example 7 days and at least 3,000 MET-minutes), “moderate” (for example 5 days of 30-minute walks) and “low” for everyone else.
