GPA calculator
Enter each course's grade and credit units and your GPA is calculated instantly as a weighted average, the sum of grade × units divided by the total units, to two decimal places. For a cumulative GPA, also enter the units you have completed and your previous cumulative GPA.

The GPA formula with credit units
Formula
GPA = Σ (grade × units) ÷ Σ unitsThe sum of grade times units, divided by the total units
| Course | Score | Units | Grade × units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calculus 1 | 17 | 3 | 51 |
| Physics 1 | 14.5 | 3 | 43.5 |
| Persian literature | 18.25 | 2 | 36.5 |
| Physical education | 20 | 1 | 20 |
| General English | 12 | 3 | 36 |
| Total | 12 | 187 |
Units are each course's weight. If you average the same five grades while ignoring units (81.75 ÷ 5), you get 16.35, which is higher than the real GPA, because the perfect grade in one-unit physical education counts as much as three-unit calculus.
How do you calculate a cumulative GPA?
New cumulative GPA
CGPA = (prev GPA × prev units + Σ grade × units) ÷ (prev units + term units)Previous points plus this term's points, divided by all units together
If you had completed 48 units with a cumulative GPA of 15.2 before this term, your previous points are 729.6. With 187 points over 12 units this term, your new cumulative GPA is (729.6 + 187) ÷ 60 = 15.28.
Don't compute a cumulative GPA as the simple average of term GPAs. A term with more units carries more weight; a simple average is only right when every term has the same number of units.
Things that change your GPA
- Failed courses: at most Iranian universities, the grade of a course you failed (usually below 10 for a bachelor's) counts in that term's GPA. If you retake the course, whether the old grade stays in your cumulative GPA or is replaced depends on your university's regulations.
- Ungraded courses: courses assessed as pass/fail, or whose units don't count towards the GPA, are usually left out; don't enter them.
- Academic probation: at most Iranian universities, a term GPA below 12 puts a bachelor's student on probation, and master's programmes use a higher threshold. Check the exact figure and its consequences in your own university's academic regulations.
- Rounding: some student information systems truncate the GPA after the second decimal instead of rounding it. The calculator shows the rounded figure and, if truncation gives a different one, shows that too.
- School: high-school averages are weighted too; in the units column, enter each subject's units or weight from the report card.
If your grades are out of 100, 4 or any other maximum, change “Score out of”. The tool also shows the equivalent out of 20 by simple proportion; that conversion doesn't replace a university's or embassy's official conversion table.
For teachers: stop adding up test scores by hand
If the grades come from tests, run the test online with Porsino's Online exam builder: multiple-choice questions are graded automatically, you set the negative marking and points for each question, and every student gets a report card with percentage, score and rank. For each subject's percentage in multiple-choice tests, see the Test percentage calculator for details.
Frequently asked questions
How is a GPA calculated with credit units?
Multiply each course's grade by its units, add up the results and divide by the total units. For example, 18 in a three-unit course and 14 in a two-unit course: (54 + 28) ÷ 5 = 16.40.
What is the difference between term GPA and cumulative GPA?
The term GPA covers only that semester's courses. The cumulative GPA is the weighted average of every course you have completed so far; to calculate it, put your completed units and previous cumulative GPA next to the new term's grades.
Does a failed course count towards the GPA?
At most Iranian universities, yes, in that term's GPA. After you retake the course, the cumulative GPA rule differs between universities; check your own university's academic regulations.
Is the GPA rounded or is the third decimal dropped?
Both are common. The calculator shows the figure rounded to two decimals and, if dropping the third decimal gives a different number, shows that underneath.
What GPA keeps you off academic probation?
At most Iranian universities, a term GPA of 12 or more for a bachelor's; master's programmes have a higher threshold. Your university's regulations set the exact figure.
What if my grades are out of 100 or 4?
Under “Score out of”, choose 100 or “Other” and enter the maximum. The formula is the same, and the tool also shows the equivalent out of 20 by simple proportion.
