What does the RSES measure?

Global self-esteem — a person's overall positive or negative evaluation of themselves. Five statements are worded positively and five negatively. Rosenberg built it for adolescents; today it is used with adolescents and adults in psychology, education and health research.

Scoring the RSES

  1. Positive items (1, 3, 4, 7, 10): strongly agree = 3, agree = 2, disagree = 1, strongly disagree = 0.
  2. Negative items (2, 5, 6, 8, 9) are reverse-scored: strongly agree = 0, agree = 1, disagree = 2, strongly disagree = 3.
  3. The total is the sum of the ten items, from 0 to 30; higher means higher self-esteem.
  4. In this template every option already carries its score and the calculated field adds them up with the SCORE() formula.

Interpreting RSES scores

ScoreLevelSuggested action
0–14Below the usual range—
15–25Within the usual range—
26–30Above the usual range—

Rosenberg set no official cut-off for the scale; these three ranges are a common teaching convention. In research, analyse the score as a continuous variable and compare it with your own sample or local norms.

RSES validity and reliability

  • Rosenberg (1965) administered the scale to 5,024 high-school juniors and seniors from ten schools in New York State.
  • The same study reported a Guttman coefficient of reproducibility of .92 and a coefficient of scalability of .72.
  • Silber and Tippett (1965) reported a two-week test–retest correlation of .85.
  • Schmitt and Allik (2005) administered it simultaneously in 53 nations; it is one of the most widely used self-esteem measures in the world.

Using the RSES in your thesis with Porsino

  1. Sign up for free and click "Build a form from this template"; the items, options and every option's score (reversed items included) are ready.
  2. If you need demographic questions (age, gender, education), add them on a separate page; keep the item wording and order unchanged so the scoring stays valid.
  3. Publish the form and send its short link or QR code to your research sample; respondents fill it in without signing up and see their score and its interpretation at the end.
  4. Each respondent's total score and level are saved automatically in separate columns; export to Excel or SPSS from the responses page and go straight to analysis.

Frequently asked questions about the RSES

How many items does the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale have?

Ten items on a 4-point scale; five are worded positively and five negatively.

Which Rosenberg items are reverse-scored?

Items 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9. In this template the reversed scores are already set on the options, so there is nothing to recode in Excel.

How is the Rosenberg score interpreted?

Scores run from 0 to 30. Teaching materials treat 15–25 as the usual range and below 15 as low self-esteem, but this is not an official cut-off; research usually treats the score as continuous.
