Who is the Academic · Illumination template for?

This template belongs to the “Academic” design and is most useful for these jobs and situations:

  • Faculty member and university lecturer
  • Researcher and postdoc
  • PhD and master’s student
  • Applying for admission abroad
  • Scholarship and sabbatical applications
  • Research institutes and centers

This template has a linear structure that applicant tracking systems read correctly, so it suits both job boards and direct applications.

About the Academic · Illumination design

An academic CV differs from a job resume: it is longer, education and research come first, and publications, research grants, teaching and awards each get their own section. The Academic design implements exactly this structure with numbered sections, book-like typography and a list styled like scholarly references.

If you’re applying for a faculty position, sabbatical, postdoc or admission abroad, make an English version of the same template too; the data is shared and only the document language changes. List papers in the projects or certificates section with a DOI link so reviewers can go straight to the source.

In the “Illumination” variation, the header and headings are adorned with Persian book-art ornament — matte gold on a light ground; a grandeur reminiscent of precious manuscripts.

A photo is optional in this template; if you leave it out, the header is laid out without an empty space.

Sections in this template

A resume in this template is made of these sections; each has its own form in the editor:

  • Header and contact details: Name, job title, email, phone, city, website and photo (optional).
  • Professional summary: Three or four sentences about your specialty, years of experience and most important achievement.
  • Work experience: Title, organization, city, start and end dates and up to 12 achievement bullets per job.
  • Education: Degree, field, university, years and GPA.
  • Skills: With levels from one to five and groups (for example software, programming languages, soft skills).
  • Languages: Each language with its proficiency level.
  • Certificates and courses: Course name, issuer, date and verification link.
  • Projects: Name, your role, link and a short description.
  • Awards and links: Awards, rankings and your LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio link.
  • Interests: A few short items that show your personality.

Reorder sections by dragging and hide any you don’t need; that section’s data isn’t deleted and comes back whenever you want.

Tips for filling in this template

  • Order sections by importance for that particular job ad; you rearrange them by dragging in the appearance settings.
  • In a single-column template, keep each experience bullet to one line starting with an action verb: “launched”, “reduced”.
  • Write your job title in exactly the words of the job ad so the screening system can find it.
  • If you have more than ten years of experience, summarize older jobs in one line so the resume doesn’t exceed two pages.
