Who is the ATS plain · Modern template for?

This template belongs to the “ATS plain” design and is most useful for these jobs and situations:

  • Applying through job boards
  • International and multinational companies
  • Large companies’ applicant tracking systems
  • Engineering and IT
  • Finance, banking and accounting
  • Internships and graduate programs

This template has a linear structure that applicant tracking systems read correctly, so it suits both job boards and direct applications.

About the ATS plain · Modern design

The ATS plain design deliberately has no decoration: no columns, tables, icons or photo. Section titles use the standard words screening software looks for — work experience, education, skills — and all text sits top to bottom in the document in reading order. If you copy the resume, the text transfers complete and in order.

Many large companies, international firms and job boards read and score a resume with software before a human sees it. A resume that isn’t read correctly at this stage goes unseen, however good it is. This template is built for exactly that stage; for sending directly to a hiring manager, keep the same data in a more colorful template too.

The “Modern” variation keeps the same linear structure with a teal accent and slightly more contemporary headings; still completely safe for screening systems.

This template is deliberately photo-free to keep the focus on the text.

Sections in this template

A resume in this template is made of these sections; each has its own form in the editor:

  • Header and contact details: Name, job title, email, phone, city, website and photo (optional).
  • Professional summary: Three or four sentences about your specialty, years of experience and most important achievement.
  • Work experience: Title, organization, city, start and end dates and up to 12 achievement bullets per job.
  • Education: Degree, field, university, years and GPA.
  • Skills: With levels from one to five and groups (for example software, programming languages, soft skills).
  • Languages: Each language with its proficiency level.
  • Certificates and courses: Course name, issuer, date and verification link.
  • Projects: Name, your role, link and a short description.
  • Awards and links: Awards, rankings and your LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio link.
  • Interests: A few short items that show your personality.

Reorder sections by dragging and hide any you don’t need; that section’s data isn’t deleted and comes back whenever you want.

Tips for filling in this template

  • Order sections by importance for that particular job ad; you rearrange them by dragging in the appearance settings.
  • In a single-column template, keep each experience bullet to one line starting with an action verb: “launched”, “reduced”.
  • Write your job title in exactly the words of the job ad so the screening system can find it.
  • If you have more than ten years of experience, summarize older jobs in one line so the resume doesn’t exceed two pages.
