What does the SUS measure?

A user's overall perception of a system's usability — software, a website, an app or even a device. It is short, technology-agnostic and used after usability tests or in user surveys. Five positive and five negative statements alternate.

Scoring the SUS

  1. Odd items (1, 3, 5, 7, 9): the response minus 1.
  2. Even items (2, 4, 6, 8, 10): 5 minus the response.
  3. The sum of these ten numbers (0 to 40) is multiplied by 2.5: a SUS score from 0 to 100.
  4. A SUS score is not a percentage; interpret it against the average of about 68.
  5. You may replace the word "system" with your product's name (e.g. "this app"); keep the rest of each statement unchanged.

Interpreting SUS scores

ScoreLevelSuggested action
Below 50Not acceptable—
50 to below 70MarginalThe average is about 68
70 and aboveAcceptable—

The acceptability ranges come from Bangor, Kortum and Miller (2008). Across roughly 500 studies the average SUS score was about 68 (Sauro, 2011); scores above 68 are above average.

SUS validity and reliability

  • Bangor et al. (2008) analysed more than 2,000 completed SUS questionnaires and reported a Cronbach's alpha of .91.
  • Lewis and Sauro (2009) confirmed high reliability and showed that items 4 and 10 form a "learnability" component.

Using the SUS in your thesis with Porsino

  1. Sign up for free and click "Build a form from this template"; the items, options and every option's score (reversed items included) are ready.
  2. If you need demographic questions (age, gender, education), add them on a separate page; keep the item wording and order unchanged so the scoring stays valid.
  3. Publish the form and send its short link or QR code to your research sample; respondents fill it in without signing up and see their score and its interpretation at the end.
  4. Each respondent's total score and level are saved automatically in separate columns; export to Excel or SPSS from the responses page and go straight to analysis.

Frequently asked questions about the SUS

How is the SUS score calculated?

Subtract 1 from each odd item and subtract each even item from 5; the sum of these ten numbers times 2.5 gives a 0–100 score. This template does it automatically.

What is a good SUS score?

The average is about 68. According to Bangor et al. (2008), 70 and above is acceptable, 50–70 marginal and below 50 not acceptable.

Can I write my product's name instead of "system"?

Yes; replacing "system" with the product name is common and has no meaningful effect on results. Keep the rest of the wording and the order unchanged.
